 Discovering and Being Your Authentic Self

From time to time, we are confronted with the question “who are you?” The people and the things that happen in and around you are directly or indirectly asking that question. When sickness strikes, when disappointment sets in, when people reject you, when your own weaknesses consume you, all these things are basically asking you who you are. The answer you supply will ultimately determine the result you get. This is why some people’s lives are full of testimonies and blessings while others suffer daily defeats and discouragements by trying to imitate or be like others. The question is simple: Who are you?

It is possible for a man to live his entire life with the wrong understanding of himself. Some people are failures today because they spend so much time and resources trying to be like another person. Instead of Christ, a celebrity becomes their pattern of life. They want to act, dress, or talk like them. They have lost their real identity and their originality in Christ has been taken from them. Did you know that you can be a prince or a princess and still be treated like a slave? Solomon said; “I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth” (Ecclesiastes 10:7). When you have the right knowledge of your true identity, things we become a lot easier for you.

You are not created to look like any human; you are created in the image of God (Genesis 1: 26-27). In other words, you are meant to walk in victory, power and dominion. You are unique in your own way. That you are failing, fearful or confused today is a departure from your original plan of God for your life. In fact, one of the tools of the adversary of the church uses is spiritual blindness (2 Corinthians 4: 4). He does not want you to see the ability and the grace of God in your life, so He keeps feeding you with lies. He knows that the moment you discover who you are, you will be free to walk in the reality of God’s agenda for your life.

You are not a failure, not an underdog and not an adulterated version of another man. You are not meant to live the life and dream of another person. The only person that is permitted to be your standard of acceptance is God. You are the child of the King, the Maker of heaven and earth. You have the authority of God dwelling inside of you. You true identity is not in what people say or think of you, it is on what God says about you. Amazingly, He calls you the apple of His eyes (Zachariah 2: 8). 1 John 3: 1 puts it in plainer terms: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is who we are!” You might have made some mistakes in the past, lived recklessly or made some unwise decisions.  God does not want you to judge yourself through those things. This is why 2 Corinthians 5: 17 says “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Quit wasting your precious time trying to be like others; start living the life God has ordained for you. As you leverage on the everlasting grace of God made available to you in Christ Jesus, I pray that you will begin to walk in the reality of who you are. God will be glorified and the entire human race will be blessed for it.
