Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a 1–0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon on Sunday, August 9, in Casablanca, Morocco.

The defending champions, who entered the tournament as Africa’s most successful women’s national team, were unable to find an equaliser despite dominating possession and creating several promising opportunities throughout the encounter.

Cameroon’s teenage defender Maeva Nyadjou, also widely reported as Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen, proved to be the difference between the two sides when she unleashed a powerful free-kick in the 19th/20th minute to give the Indomitable Lionesses the lead.

Nigeria responded with sustained pressure and created a number of chances as the match progressed. However, Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina produced an outstanding performance between the posts, making a series of crucial saves to preserve her side’s advantage.

Reports credited Bihina with as many as eight important saves as Cameroon withstood wave after wave of Nigerian attacks to secure a historic victory.

Historic Early Exit for the Super Falcons

The defeat represents a significant setback for the Super Falcons and their most disappointing finish in WAFCON history.

Nigeria had never previously failed to reach at least the semi-final stage of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. With multiple continental titles to their name, the Super Falcons have traditionally been one of the dominant forces in African women’s football.

Their quarter-final elimination therefore marks the first time the Nigerian side has failed to make the last four of the competition.

The result also ends Nigeria’s hopes of defending the WAFCON title they won in the previous edition.

Cameroon Book Semi-Final Place and World Cup Ticket

For Cameroon, the victory was more than just a place in the semi-finals.

The Indomitable Lionesses have now secured their place in the last four, where they will face hosts Morocco, while also earning automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The four WAFCON semi-finalists are guaranteed automatic qualification for the World Cup, making Cameroon’s victory doubly significant.

Super Falcons Still Have a Route to the World Cup

Despite the disappointment, Nigeria’s World Cup dream is not over.

The Super Falcons will enter the African play-off route involving the teams that lost in the quarter-finals. Nigeria are expected to face South Africa in a play-in fixture, with reports differing on whether the match will take place on Wednesday or Thursday.

Victory in that encounter would keep Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alive through the subsequent inter-confederation play-off route.

That means the quarter-final defeat is a major setback, but it does not yet bring Nigeria’s World Cup campaign to an end.

Difficult Campaign Comes to a Disappointing End

The Super Falcons' journey to the quarter-finals had already been an eventful one.

Nigeria experienced a difficult group stage, including a shock defeat to tournament debutants Malawi, before recovering strongly to qualify for the knockout phase.

They then produced an emphatic 6–2 victory over Egypt to book their place in the quarter-finals and appeared to have regained momentum in their title defence.

However, Cameroon proved a much tougher obstacle.

Despite Nigeria controlling much of the game and repeatedly testing the Cameroonian defence, the Falcons could not find the breakthrough they needed.

Bihina’s goalkeeping heroics, combined with Nyadjou’s decisive free-kick, ultimately sent Cameroon through and brought Nigeria’s title defence to a premature end.

A Setback, But Not the End

The defeat will undoubtedly raise questions about Nigeria’s performance at this year’s tournament, particularly given the team’s historic record in the competition.

For Cameroon, however, it represents a major statement of intent. The Indomitable Lionesses have eliminated the defending champions and earned both a semi-final place and a ticket to the 2027 World Cup.

For the Super Falcons, attention now turns to the play-off route.

Nigeria may have lost the opportunity to defend their continental crown, but with a World Cup qualification pathway still available, their campaign is far from over.
