In Your Eyes by Bernard Dadie

To a child

In your eyes so clear

I read the dreams of man.

In your eyes so tender

I view nature in blossom, in full bloom.

In your eyes so transparent,

I see again all the eyes

blue of the rivers

white of the mountains

all the eyes

green of the meadows

red of the fires and stars

the eyes of other worlds

All the eyes of the Universe.

In your babble

I hear

rumours of Dawn

the harmony of the laughter of men

all the vibrations of the living Universe.

In the slapping of your hands of a cherub

I hear all the tuned tam-tams

All the songs of the Universe.

And when I hold them, your hands,

I hold all the hands of rosy Morn,

The hands of ages enlaced with time,

All the hands of virgin Hopes

The hand of men.

In your eyes so clear,

I read again all the dreams of man

And Eternity caught in your eyelashes

Repeats to me the music of the Universe

In your eyes so blue! so blue!

Love bursts into bloom.

In your eyes so far, so far,

my love is beaming.

In your eyes so near! so near!

softly sings my heart.

In your eyes, child,

I view nature in blossom, in full bloom.
